“Hey, girls, get in here. She’s waking up.”

I recognize the voice, but it takes me a second to figure out exactly why it turns my stomach. And then the nausea solidifies into one, single, infuriating reason.

“Wow, babe. You were out,” Liam chuckles. “What were you doing in a car with my dad, anyway? He’s not telling me anything.”

“Is that so?” I work to sit up in the hospital bed, achy and groggy from whatever the shit is they’ve been pumping into me. However woozy I may be, I’m not letting my guard down with this asshole for a second.

“Yeah.” He chuckles in a nervous way that lets me know that he suspects the hot water he’s in. “He’s not talking to me at all. But, you know, he’s a dick.”

“Like father, like son, huh?” The grumble comes out softly, but only because I’m gathering up my strength for the fight.

“What’s that?”

Before I can throw the pitch I’m winding up for, I’m overtaken by the whirlwind that is my two best friends. They nearly squash the air out of me with what I’m sure is intended to be full-on affection.

“Oh, my God, Kiley!”

“Holy shit, girl! We were so worried about you!”

“Well, I’m okay,” I assure them. Love them though I do, they just kind of derailed the thing I need to be saving my strength for. “Or at least I think I am. Did you guys talk to the doctor?”

“He said you’ve got a concussion and some bruises, but that’s it.” Liam’s oily little voice sends a shiver through me. “You’re really lucky, actually.”

“Am I?” Even laid up, I’m ready to eat this prick for breakfast.

“Oooh,” Michelle laughs at the sound of my voice. “Chilly! Did they take out your sense of humor too?”

“Can you excuse us for a second, girls?” I don’t take my eyes off of Liam, and he’s struggling to keep his innocent face on. My friends seem at a loss for words.

“You just woke up and you want us to go?” Michelle asks.

“Yep. I’ll catch up with you two later, okay?” I hate to seem frosty, but my friends will forgive me, and I’ve got some real work that needs doing. They both shuffle a bit at being shooed away, but they leave me alone with the grinning idiot at the foot of my bed. He takes me by the toes and gives my foot a shake.

“I was really worried about you there, hot stuff.”

“Yeah…you know what, Liam?”

“What, baby?”

“I’m gonna need you to fuck off.”

His eyes bulge, and I can see the vein stand out on his forehead as he strains to figure out how he’s going to get out of this one.

“Haha.” He gives me a weak-ass laugh. “That concussion must really be something. Are you sure you’re thinking straight?”

“I’ve never been more clear-headed about anything in my life. You are a lying, manipulative, spoiled cheater, and I want you so far out of my life that I’d have to hire an astronaut if I wanted to find you.
